Modern/Traditional Rural Irish Cottage

This is a replacement dwelling where we transformed an old Irish cottage by knocking down 2/3 of the old cottage keeping 1/3 some for a garden room into a revamped traditional Irish cottage look and feel from the front entrance to a modern home with a rear return taking in breath taking views of the Sperrin mountains in Northern Ireland.

The front elevation is very traditional all done to blend in with the Irish cottage look featuring parapet walls on the roof with copains to give the cottage look with a small flat roof porch. The parapet flat roof porch and windows are done in this way to give a rural cottage look to sit nicely with the remains of the old existing cottage.

The site is elevated at the top of a hill with breath taking 180 degree views of the Sperrin’s to the back which is south-facing with a modern feel to the back to get the most out of the views from the rear of this site.

The main of this house is a 1.5 storey with a single storey rear return angled to take in the views which houses the kitchen dining and snug room with a vaulted ceiling and roof lights. This 1 storey return has a large glass corner with apex window and doors opening out onto the covered veranda and patio area taking in those breath-taking landscape views.

Leading out from the kitchen at the back into the main hall houses the main bathroom, office/study, and the front lounge. Including a utility room and back door. Upstairs houses two bedrooms with a small toilet and a master bedroom with dressing room and en-suite with double door accessing a balcony taking in the views.

As you approach the site form the rear you can see the large sweeping stone wall starting off form a low patio wall rising up to balcony level on the 1st floor hiding a stone arch leading to the back door also framed in stone. The covered veranda is all glass, finished with crisp white render and basalt stone with feature zinc clad dormer with double doors out onto the balcony.

The rear of the house has been given a modern feel with modern features, black windows, stone, and cladding and large panes of glass. The front has a more cottage feel with cream window décor and featured render heads and simple flat roof porch and cottage door.

All of this was done to have a compact design with a lot of features to take in the Irish cottage look with an area to take in the landscape views all round the site.
